AFH Chicago’s design for the LaCasita field house renovation at Whittier School wins second place in The Air We Breathe – the Chicago Clean Air Design Challenge! 100% of the prize money will benefit the Whittier Parents Committee and will fund the purchase, installation, and implementation of a living wall / vertical garden system at the existing field house. The vertical garden will be composed of Woolly Pockets, soft gardening containers that can be mounted to walls and taken indoors during the winter. The Woolly Pockets will catalyze the integration of urban agriculture education into the school’s curriculum. Students and community members will also learn first hand how the living wall will help filter the air and improve the health and vitality of their environment.
Select entries from the competition, including AFH Chicago’s winning design, will be exhibited at the Chicago Arts District‘s 2nd Fridays opening, on Friday June 10, 2011, from 6:00pm – 9:00pm. The gallery is located at 1915 S. Halsted in Pilsen.
